Best Book Deals

March 23, 2006

I love to read, and while I have a really wonderful public library in my town, it doesn’t always have all the books I need. And, let’s face it, sometimes you just want to own a book.

We also have an amazing used book store, and a Barnes and Noble, of course. B&N is great when I need a book now, but when I can wait a little bit I love to get a deal.

Amazon is great when you can find someone selling used books in good condition. Sometimes you can even find the books you want on eBay, if you’re willing to bid and maybe not get the item you wanted.

My favorite source for book deals, however, is Best Book Buys. this comparison shopping site gives you prices from a number of new and used book retailers on the web. You can search for books by author, title, subject or ISBN and then compare prices.

I recently did a search for the last book I read, which retails for $14.00. Half.com had it used for about $6, and the site calculated it would cost me a little over $9 with shipping. That’s for a used copy. Prices ranged from $5.89 to $14.00 without shipping.

The great thing about this site is that it allows you to see at a glance what is out there. It tells you if the books are new or used, which states have to pay sales tax and how the item is usually shipped. Clicking the buy button takes you to the site where the book is located.

This is a quick way to save big bucks on all the books you need without having to search 10 or 12 book sites yourself.

How to find good deals on the Internet

March 18, 2006

You may know people who always find the good deals on the Internet. You may be asking yourself, where do they find all those good deals?

This entry will explain a little bit about how to find good deals, where to look and what to watch out for.

First of all, everyone has heard of Ebay, right? Ebay is the king of auction sites. If you know what you’re looking for, and it’s a rare item or you just want to see what people are paying for those things these days, Ebay is a great place to check out. Keep in mind, though, that the goods you receive are from an individual selling, and are often second-hand. You can get some great deals, but it is also possible to sometimes overpay if you get caught up in the excitement of a last-minute bidding war with someone else who also wants the item.

If you’re looking for general consumer electronics, like a digital camera or printer, it’s good to check out different review sites like Epinions.com and / or Shopper.com. Then, once you’ve decided on the product you want to purchase, start researching the different places to buy. Shopper.com offers a nice price comparison engine. Another good comparison shopping site is Froogle, Google’s pricing engine. It sometimes has deals that no one else has, so make sure you check there too.

In the end, finding the best deal can take some time, but it can be really worth it, since you are usually not paying the extra overhead of a traditional “brick and mortar” store and you can also usually save on taxes too. But, if you need a product right now, today, you may still have to go to a regular store and pay the premium for the immediate availability of the item you’re looking for.

Happy deal hunting!
